Roger Tiley started his professional photographic career in 1978, after studying for A levels. He successfully gained the position as a trainee industrial photographer for Lucas car parts. He took photographs across the country for Lucas in their many factories. The subject matter ranged from works accidents, aerial thermal imaging, advertising and publicity shots to the company's magazine titles. "I was thrown in at the deep end. I had to learn how to use a 5x4 inch camera quickly, in conjunction with lighting interiors of large factories. It was a superb technical grounding."
In 1982, Roger decided to specialize in documentary photography. Studying under Magnum photographer, David Hurn, he began to regularly exhibit his work and publish in a number of photo magazines.
After completing the course, Roger regularly worked for national newspapers, including The Times, Sunday Times, The Observer and Guardian. He worked on many picture stories, one being the 1984/85 miners' strike. This led to a major commission titled 'the Valleys Project', where he worked along side established photographers such as David Bailey.
Since 1987, Roger has become an important figure in photographic education. He has given lectures in the USA and across the UK. He has been a full time lecturer in photography for the past twenty one years.
In 1997, Roger won a major commission to photograph the Appalachian people of Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. This was followed by a commission documenting the Welsh communities in Pennsylvania, USA.
In 2000, a further major commission, titled 'Just Another Day', was awarded to Roger, with other notable Magnum photographers such as Bruce Gilden and David Hurn taking part in the project.
Roger's work has been exhibited widely and published all over the world. He is the author of three books and has appeared on television on numerous occasions, even being interviewed for Good Morning America.
During the past few years, Roger has become interested in photographing the landscape in Wales. This has become an interest of which he enjoys sharing with participants at Photoworkshopwales. Roger is a dedicated photographer/teacher and passionate and knowledgeable, which he enjoys sharing with guests.

My job is to run the business in my capacity of Office Mnager. This involves developing the web site, providing quality facilities and selecting suitable tutors to deliver the courses. We make sure our guests are treated to the highest quality of photographic training, and also given an experience they will never forget. This includes experiencing our beautiful country; ranging from the mountains and coastline, to the post industrial Welsh valleys.
